The Ground Screw Type M – 76x1600x3 M18 is a screw-in steel foundation for decks, terraces and other lightweight structures. It is wound into the ground like a giant screw — no digging, no concrete and no curing time — and it carries load as soon as it is in. The pile is 76 mm in shaft diameter, 1600 mm long, formed from 3 mm wall steel, and finished with a flat hexagonal bearing plate with a central M18 stud, so brackets, base plates and adjustable post shoes bolt straight on.
At 1600 mm the shaft reaches well below the normal frost-affected layer, which is what keeps a deck level through winter. The M head suits bolted connections — post shoes, beam brackets, levelling nuts and steel base plates all fix directly to the plate.
Why choose a ground screw instead of concrete?
- No concrete, no curing — the footing carries load the moment it is driven, so the structure can be built the same day.
- No excavation and no spoil — lawns, paving and planting around the site stay intact.
- All-season installation — unlike concrete, ground screws can be installed in frost, rain and cold weather.
- Works in almost any soil — clay, sand, gravel, made ground and lake beds, without pre-drilling in most conditions.
- Removable and reusable — the screw can be unwound and re-driven if the structure is ever moved.
- Lower total cost — less labour, no ready-mix, no waste disposal, no waiting time.
Where this size is used
- Decks and terraces — a level, load-bearing grid of footings that will not settle or heave.
- Pergolas, carports, gazebos and canopies — post bases installed in a single visit.
- Fences, gates and screens — fast, repeatable post spacing in any soil.
- Garden rooms, sheds, greenhouses and log stores — a full foundation without excavation.
- Playgrounds, signage, flagpoles and lamp posts — secure anchoring in open ground.
- Jetties, piers, boardwalks and footbridges — ground screws can also be driven into a lake or river bed.
Installation
The pile can be driven by hand with a turning bar for shorter lengths, or with a hydraulic drive head on a mini-digger for longer piles and harder ground. Set out the grid first, drive each pile until the head sits at the planned level, then fine-tune the height by winding the pile in or out. Keep the pile vertical while driving; if it meets a stone, back it out, move 50–100 mm and re-drive. Installation equipment is available for hire.
Good to know
Ground screws are a complete replacement for concrete pad foundations under lightweight structures. Because nothing is cast, the footing can be unwound and reused, which makes them the usual choice for temporary buildings, rented sites and structures that may be relocated.
