Product details

The Fastshifter Joist Protection Tape 50mm × 20m is supplied in a 50 mm × 20 m roll. FastShifter butyl joist tape is a self-adhesive protective tape for the top face of deck joists. It seals the line where every screw penetrates the timber, keeps water out of the joist and dramatically extends the life of the substructure — the part of a deck that always fails first.

A deck substructure is exposed to standing water at every fixing point. Joist tape is the cheapest single upgrade you can make to a deck: a roll costs a fraction of the boards, and it is what decides whether the frame lasts five years or twenty.

Key features

  • Manufactured with butyl technology, the standard for joist tape in the USA and Germany.
  • Extends the service life of timber and metal substructures.
  • Protects against moisture ingress and corrosion.
  • Exceptionally tacky and elastic — seals tightly around each screw.
  • Tough enough to be walked on during installation without tearing.
  • Good sound absorption, reducing creaks and footfall noise.
  • Water and weather resistant; works with all timber decking and metal frames.
  • Improved adhesion to WPC composite boards.

Where it is used

  • On top of every joist and bearer before the boards go down.
  • Over aluminium and galvanised steel joists, to isolate dissimilar materials.
  • On cut ends and notches, where timber is most vulnerable.
  • On ledger boards and any timber fixed against a wall.
  • Standard single joists — 50 mm covers a typical 45–50 mm joist face.

Installation

Wipe the joist clean and dry. Roll the tape along the centre of the joist face, peel the liner progressively and press down firmly as you go. Overlap joints by 50 mm and fold the tape down over cut ends. Fix the boards straight through the tape — the butyl seals around every screw shank.
